Today, Saturday, July 03, 2010 Serena Williams wins her fourth Wimbledon title in a mere 63 minutes. Williams played her best career tennis during the Wimbledon tournament which took place over the course of the last two weeks. Her efforts paid off today on Center Court as she raised the winning trophy which marked her 13th major career title passing Billie Jean King in overall majors won.
During her acceptance speech Williams turned towards King and playfully shouted “Hey, Billie, I got you.” “Thirteen is my lucky number.” Williams said King had told her prior to the match that she had better beat her all time record and Williams took her up on that and accomplished her objective.
Williams, the top seeded player in the league latest victim was the Russian player Vera Zvonareva who ranked 21 entering into the match. In all fairness, there was nothing wrong with Zvonareva’s game play other than the fact that she was unable to do anything constructive with Williams serve. Play after play and serve after serve, Williams racked up the points until finally claiming victory over Zvonareva after a 6-3, 6-2 domination.
Despite all of her efforts, Zvonareva could not seem to get a single break point against Williams. Williams, depicting the qualities of a true champion, served 88 aces throughout the Wimbledon tournament which amounts to 58 more than anyone else.
Serena and Venus (the older sister of Serena) hold a total of nine Wimbledon championship titles amongst the two of them over the last eleven years. They have dominated this tournament in the past and clearly are not ready to give up their powerful position in the world of tennis.
Congratulations Serena, stay healthy and keep doing what you are doing. Serena Williams, a true champion indeed.
